Dear AOC Members

We are aware of recent reports and discussions regarding protests and tensions related to immigration in parts of South Africa. We understand that this may raise concern, particularly for our fellow African colleagues, and we want to address this openly and with care.

We wish to acknowledge that incidents involving violence and unrest are deeply regrettable and are not reflective of the values of dignity, respect, and Pan-African collaboration that underpin both our profession and this congress. Such actions are unequivocally condemned.

At the same time, we would like to reassure you based on our lived experience and the current conditions on the ground. AOC 2026 will be hosted at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC), located in the central business district of Cape Town, close to the V&A Waterfront and major hotels. This area is a well-established international hub, known for its strong security presence, excellent infrastructure, and welcoming environment for visitors from around the world.

Cape Town continues to receive thousands of international travellers each day, the vast majority of whom enjoy a safe and positive experience. The CTICC precinct, in particular, is recognised for its high standards of organisation and safety, with effective and well managed security measures in place.

Furthermore, recent incidents reported in the media were localised and have not occurred within the areas designated for conference activities or delegate accommodation. There is no indication of any direct or targeted risk to delegates attending AOC 2026.

As with travel to any global city, we simply encourage standard precautions, such as using registered transport providers and seeking guidance when needed.

As colleagues who live and work in South Africa, this is both our professional home and a place we are proud to share with you. We are confident that you will feel safe, welcomed, and cared for during your time here.

We look forward to welcoming you to Cape Town, not only for a meaningful scientific exchange, but for an experience grounded in warmth, hospitality, and Pan-African connection.

Sincerely

AOC Local Organising Committee 2026
