AOC Congress 2026

AOC 2026 Congress

CTICC

31 July – 2 Aug 2026

-

The AOC holds a Scientific Congress every two years at a location approved by the BOT. This event aims to be the largest conference for eye workers in Africa bringing together members from across the continent and across fields.

Invitation from President

Esteemed members of the African and global eye care community,

It is a distinct honour to welcome you to the Scientific Congress of African Ophthalmology Council in 2026 (AOC2026), hosted in the vibrant city of Cape Town, South Africa, in collaboration with the Ophthalmological Society of South Africa (OSSA).

Our journey to this moment has been defined by unyielding progress and collective resilience. Following the immense success of AOC 2024 in Kigali, which set a new benchmark for in-person collaboration, and the critical global reach achieved by AOC Virtual 2025, the AOC has established itself as the premier platform for advancing eye health science across our continent. We arrive in Cape Town on a wave of powerful momentum, ready to build upon these achievements.

This Congress, however, carries a significance that transcends even our recent successes. Many of you will recall the deep disappointment when our plans to host WOC 2020 in this beautiful city were curtailed by the global pandemic and subsequent organizational challenges. That setback tested our resolve. Our return to Cape Town in 2026 is, therefore, a triumphant statement—a powerful symbol that the African scientific spirit, once delayed, cannot be denied. We are here to fulfil that promise of five years ago. And we are stronger, bolder and more prepared this time.

The AOC 2026 is meticulously designed to support our shared vision of eliminating avoidable blindness. Under the theme, Ophthalmology from Cape to Cairo – Unifying. Innovating. Defining Standards. The AOC2026 Program outlines a comprehensive scientific agenda for all cadres of eye care—including ophthalmic nurses, optometrists, residents, fellows, and senior consultants. The sessions, workshops, and courses are curated to ensure that every professional finds practical, evidence-based, and culturally relevant knowledge to immediately elevate service delivery in their home countries.

Our sincere gratitude goes to OSSA for their outstanding partnership and commitment to creating a world-class educational experience.

We invite you to immerse yourselves in this program, engage with the leaders, and contribute to the scientific discourse that will shape the next generation of African eye care. The future of sight is in our hands, and in Cape Town, we gather to make that future brighter than ever before.

Kind regards

 Prof Ciku Mathenge
President of the African Ophthalmology Congress (AOC)

Invitation from Vice-President

It is my distinct pleasure to invite you to South Africa and the city of Cape Town for the second in-person Congress of the African Ophthalmology Council from 31 July to 2 August 2026.

Building on the huge success of our first in-person congress in Kigali in 2024 and the recent 2025 virtual congress, we plan to bring you a varied and compelling academic program, an unmissable trade exhibition and hands-on surgical skills wetlabs.

Above all, you will have an opportunity to meet eye care professionals from across the African continent and beyond.  New friendships will be formed, old friendships strengthened, and with these the possibilities of closer collaboration within Africa on patient care and research.

The congress will be held at the CTICC, one the world’s premier international convention centres.  It is in the heart of the City of Cape Town, a short walk from the spectacular harbour and waterfront and a short drive from Cape Town International airport.  Numerous hotels in the area will accommodate every need and budget.

As the congress chairperson and AOC vice-president for Southern African, I hope to welcome each one of you in person and offer you an opportunity and experience of a lifetime.

 With warmest regards

 Dr Andrew Boliter

Congress Chair & Vice-president for AOC Southern Africa Region

Phaco – Envision Wetlab: Description

The Phaco Training Wet Lab at the AOC Congress in Cape Town offers ophthalmologists an opportunity to gain practical exposure to modern cataract surgery techniques in a structured, hands-on learning environment. The programme is delivered through collaboration between ESCRS faculty and experienced local surgeons, combining international expertise with regional clinical insight.

Participants will be introduced to fundamental phacoemulsification principles and core surgical techniques such as divide-and-conquer nucleus management, fluidics control, and safe surgical workflow. Following focused instructional guidance, trainees will engage in supervised practical sessions using simulation and training eyes.

Envision Africa supports the initiative as a technical and logistical facilitator, providing surgical equipment, consumables, and on-site expertise to ensure a realistic and efficient training environment.

By complementing the scientific programme with practical skills development, the wet lab aims to strengthen surgical confidence and support the continued advancement of cataract surgery across Africa.

Preparation of posters

  • Click here to download a suggested poster template from the website. It is NOT compulsory to use this template.
  • Our suggestion would be to make an A0 (9 cm x 84.1cm) poster (Portrait style). As this is a standard size it is also more cost efficient when printing and laminating the poster.
  • All posters should be laminated if they need to be used after the congress. Unlaminated posters might get damaged when being removed from the poster boards.
(Do not mount posters on heavy boards – these do not hang properly.)
  • Please bring your poster to the congress office upon registration. The organisers are responsible for pasting your poster to the poster boards with double-sided tape.
  • Posters will be displayed from Friday morning till Saturday.
It is the responsibility of the presenter to remove his / her poster(s) on Saturday, 1 August 2026 by 13:30
  • Indicate the title of the presentation and its authors.
  • Use block lettering for other portions of your presentation to add emphasis and easy readability.
  • Keep illustrative material simple by using charts, graphs, drawings and pictures. Remember that illustrations must be viewed from 1 to 2 metres.
  • Make captions brief, levels few and clear.
  • Make posters as self-explanatory as possible.
  • Do not be overly ornate or artsy (this distracts from impact of your information).
  • Do not make posters elaborate or costly, although it is necessary for posters to be made professionally.

Poster font sizes

  • Text on the poster must be readable from a distance of 1 to 2 metres.
  • The following font sizes work well:
  • Titles: 72+
  • Sub-titles: 54+
  • Text 30+
  • Sub-text 20+
  • The actual font used can affect the appropriate font size: keep to a standard sans-serif font such as Arial, Helvetica or Trebuchet.

Visas

It is strongly recommended that all travellers check the latest visa requirements with the nearest South African Embassy or Consulate before travelling,
OR click here or click here

The passports of all travellers entering South Africa must contain at least two clean (unstamped) visa pages each time entry is sought.

Travellers entering South Africa from countries where yellow fever is endemic are often required to present their yellow World Health Organisation (WHO) vaccination record or other proof of inoculation. If they are unable to do so, they must be inoculated at the airport to be permitted entry.

It is of outmost importance to start the process at least 12-16 weeks (3 months) before your intended travel date. Delays are common due to high volumes of applications and backlogs.

There are two main ways to apply for a South African Visa, the first is applying directly at the South African Embassy in your country, take a look at the  South African mission for clear instructions.

The second option is to start your Visa application through the VFS Global Website. South Africa has outsourced its Visa application and biometric collection to VFS Global in most African countries. Simply go onto the VFS website, select “South Africa” as your destination, and then select your country of residence. This country-specific VFS site will have the exact checklist, fee structure, and application procedures.

Necessary Requirements

  1. Your passport must still be valid for a minimum of 30 days after the intended end of your visit, and the Passport must have 2 blank side-by-side pages (not endorsement pages). This is a strict rule.
  2. You must have two recent, identical colour passport-sized photographs
  3. Proof of flight reservations: You must show proof of an onward and return flight ticket reservation. Do not pay for the final ticket until the visa is granted, but a reserved booking is mandatory. Avoid reserving a one-way ticket, always show a return booking.
  4. Proof of Accommodation: Detailed itinerary with confirmed hotel bookings for every night of your stay.
  5. Certified bank statements for the last 3-6 months.
  6. Proof of employment/studies: A formal letter from your employer on company letterhead stating your position, salary, date of employment, and that you have been granted leave for the specific travel dates. Include recent pay slips. If a student, you will need an official letter from your university confirming your enrolment and permission to be absent.
  7. Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate: Mandatory for travellers from countries with a risk of yellow fever transmission. You will be asked for it upon arrival in SA, and your visa may be contingent on having it.
  8. Visa Fee: Pay the non-refundable processing fee as required by VFS or the South African Embassy.

The Application Process

Download and complete the online form. Some VFS centres require you to complete parts of the form online before booking an appointment, fill it out completely, truthfully, and legibly without leaving any blanks. Once your documents are ready then only you can book your appointment online through the VFS or in person at the SA Embassy. It is important to note that appointment slots can fill up weeks in advance- therefore, plan accordingly. The documents gathered will be submitted during this appointment, and you will also provide your biometric data (fingerprints and photograph).

Special Considerations

Your application must prove: the purpose of your visit is indeed genuine tourism, you have sufficient funds to cover your stay and that you will return to your home country before the visa expires

  1. Demonstrating Strong Ties to your Home Country: The visa officer needs to be convinced you will not overstay; therefore proof of employment, property ownership, family dependants left behind, and financial assets in your home country are all crucial evidence.
  2. Clear Itinerary: A vague itinerary is a red flag. Have a detailed day-by-day plan with confirmed bookings.
  3. Travel History: A passport with visas from other countries is very advantageous. If this is your first international trip, be extra thorough in proving your ties to home.
