Fellowship-trained in adult and paediatric glaucoma at Moorfields Eye Hospital, she is President of the South African Glaucoma Society and Immediate Past President of Women in Ophthalmology South Africa. She is a Visiting Professor at Wenzhou Medical University and Eye Hospital, serves on the Global Advisory Council for Women Leaders in Eye Health, and is Volunteer Faculty and phaco-development faculty for Orbis International. Her interests include clinical governance, surgical education, and adult and paediatric glaucoma, and she services on numerous provincial and national committees and advisory boards. | Body | |
| 9:08- 9:18 | Keynote: Leading Change in Eyecare: lessons and opportunities for Africa | Prof Kovin Naidoo | Prof. Naidoo is the Global Head of Advocacy and Partnerships at the OneSight EssilorLuxottica Foundation and the former CEO of the Brien Holden Vision Institute. He is an optometrist, academic, former anti-apartheid activist and political prisoner and an internationally celebrated public health leader. Professor Naidoo is Honorary Professor of Optometry at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN), and Adjunct Professor at University of New South Wales, Australia as well as a Visiting Professor at Wenzhou Medical School, China. He has published extensively in epidemiology and public health. Prof. Naidoo is a former chair of IAPB Africa, served on the 2019 WHO World Report on Vision editorial committee and WHO eMyopia group. He is currently on the WHO Global Status Report on Eye care and Vision Impairment Advisory group. Prof. Naidoo was the Inaugral Chair of the International Myopia Institute(IMI), co-founder of the Global Myopia Awareness Coalition, Global Ophthalmic Institute, the Global Optometry Public Health Alliance and One School at A Time Program. Prof Naidoo is a Fulbright Scholar, an Ashoka Fellow and a Schwab Fellow. He was jointly awarded with Professor Brien Holden, the Schwab Social Entrepreneur Award for Africa 2010 at the regional World Economic Forum. He received the Prevention of Blindness (POB) Shield Lecture award from the Saudi Ophthalmology Society and an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters by the State University of New York (SUNY). The British College of Optometrists awarded him a honorary fellowship in 2009. He was African Optometrist of the Year in 2002, then International Optometrist of the Year in 2007. | Body | |

| 9:26- 9:34 | How to build and sustain a world-leading society | Dr Stephen McLeod | Dr. McLeod is Chief Executive Officer for the American Academy of Ophthalmology and Professor and Chair Emeritus in the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of California, San Francisco. He pursued his undergraduate degree at Dartmouth College, followed by his medical doctorate degree at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He completed ophthalmology residency at the Illinois Eye and Ear Infirmary of the University of Illinois in Chicago, followed by fellowship training in cornea, external disease and refractive surgery at the Doheny Eye Institute. He served as Chair of the Department of Ophthalmology at UCSF from 2005 to 2022. Dr. McLeod’s has published over 150 peer reviewed scientific papers and delivered over a dozen named lectures. He is former Chair of the Ophthalmic Devices Panel of the Medical Devices Advisory Committee of the Food and Drug Administration and has served as a member of the National Advisory Eye Council of the National Institutes of Health, on the Council of the American Ophthalmological Society, and on the Boards of Directors of the American Board of Ophthalmology and the Heed Ophthalmic Foundation. He currently serves on the Board of Trustees for Research to Prevent Blindness. Dr. McLeod is former Editor-in-Chief for the peer review journal Ophthalmology. | ||
| 9:34 - 9:42 | Keynote: Starting with Nothing, Ending with Vision: The Evolution of Eye Care in Karamoja, Uganda (2015-2023) | Dr Gladys Atto | Gladys Atto is a Ugandan ophthalmologist with a subspecialty in public eye health from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and a Global Eye Health and Clinical Fellowship from the LV Prasad Eye Institute. She is the first ophthalmologist to serve in Karamoja, a remote subregion of Uganda, where she has performed over 7,000 sight-restoring cataract surgeries and transformed the local eye unit into a center of excellence for eye care. Her leadership and dedication have earned her numerous accolades, including the Women in Medicine Award from the Uganda Medical Association in 2021, the Doctor of the Year Award from the Ministry of Health in 2023 and the Early Career Grant from the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene in 2025. In 2023, the Association of Surgeons of Uganda named her among the Top 22 Rising Stars in Surgery, and in 2024, the Observer Tabloid listed her among Uganda’s Top 15 Most Influential People. Gladys is also an accomplished researcher with nine publications, numerous presentations at national and international conferences, and was a keynote speaker at the COECSA Congress in Mombasa in 2023. He holds a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Public Health from the University of Cape Town. He is employed as the Director of the Community Eye Health Institute (UCT-CEHI) in the Division of Ophthalmology at the University of Cape Town, South Africa, where he is (amongst others) responsible for convening and teaching in Postgraduate Studies in Community Eye Health, leading the Childhood Blindness Registry project and offering consultancy and training in health systems strengthening. He has vast experience conducting training, planning and advisory consultancies in disability and eye care in sub-Saharan Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. His keen interest is to help strengthen public health services through strategic leadership and management development, and advocacy and support provided for thorough planning, purposeful monitoring, evaluation and learning, emphasising effective quality and risk management of information, material, and human resources. | Body | |

He has received the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s Lifetime Achievement award, the North American Neuro-ophthalmology Society’s Merit Award, the Asia Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology Achievement award and more than 10 teaching awards throughout his career. He received a special tribute from the International Council of Ophthalmology for his global work in education. He has given more than 1200 invited neuro-ophthalmology and medical education lectures in more than 75 countries and has over 160 publications in these fields. He has served as a consultant to the WHO regrading international eye care resources and has received distinguished service awards from the national societies of China, Pakistan, Tunisia and the Ukraine.
