Leadership training has been a key activity of the AOC. In 2007 MEACO provided backing for the Advisory Leadership Group (ALG) for Africa with the aim to strengthen ophthalmology on the continent. The ICO, MEACO and the AAO provided faculty support. Between 2007 and 2009, The ALG provided leadership training courses to 40 Ophthalmologists from Africa. Most of those Doctors went on to be leaders of the National and Regional Eye Societies, as well as the ICO. Indeed the first project of the AOC would be Leadership Development Programs for future generations of African Ophthalmology leaders with Dr. Sidney Gicheru leading the Anglophone AOC LDP and Dr. Michael Brennan leading the Francophone AOC LDP. The AOC prioritises the continuation of leadership development on the continent.
